Port Blair, June 28 — A moderate earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale struck the Andaman Sea late Saturday evening, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The tremor occurred at 8:28 PM IST on June 27, with its epicenter located at latitude 9.75° N and longitude 94.06° E, approximately 254 kilometers southeast of Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The quake originated at a depth of 25 kilometers beneath the seabed.

The NCS confirmed the seismic activity via a post on its official X account, stating: “EQ of M: 4.6, On: 27/06/2025 20:28:18 IST, Lat: 9.75 N, Long: 94.06 E, Depth: 25 Km, Location: Andaman Sea.” No immediate damage to life or property has been reported from the islands or neighboring regions.

This is the second earthquake reported in the Andaman Sea this week. Earlier, on June 25, a quake of magnitude 4.2 was recorded in the same region. Seismic experts suggest that such occurrences are not uncommon due to the region’s tectonic activity, which results from the interaction between the Indian Plate and the Burmese Microplate.

Meanwhile, a stronger earthquake also hit the southern Philippines on Saturday. The 6.1 magnitude quake occurred offshore near Davao Occidental province at a depth of 101 kilometers. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) noted that the tremor struck approximately 70 kilometers from the nearest populated areas. No casualties or significant structural damage have been reported so far.

In recent months, several seismic events have shaken various parts of South and Southeast Asia. In April, an earthquake of magnitude 3.4 rattled Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh, India. That tremor was part of a cluster of four earthquakes that occurred within one hour across India, Myanmar, and Tajikistan, sparking alarm over the region’s active fault lines.

Experts continue to monitor these regions closely, as tectonic activity in the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ring of Fire poses recurring seismic risks. Authorities have advised residents in sensitive zones to stay informed and follow earthquake preparedness protocols.
