In a special briefing by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that more U.S. deportation flights could follow, and India has been informed by the U.S. that there are “487 Indian citizens with final expelled orders awaiting deportation now.
As questions on deportations were asked, the foreign secretary said, “The real cancer is the misleading of innocents to undertake unlawful immigration, and the people who do this must be prosecuted.”
He further said, India has registered its concerns with the U.S. on the deportation issue.” He added that MEA has raised the issues of “mistreatment of illegal migrants deported to India” and added they “will continue to do so.”
Misri further declared Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay an official visit to the U.S. to meet President Donald Trump on February 12-13.
He said, The fact that PM Modi is among the first few leaders to be invited indicates the importance of the India-U.S. partnership. PM Modi is to visit France on February 10-12 to attend the AI summit and hold talks with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris and also travel to Marseille and Cadarache.”
