Five terrorists were killed injuring two soldiers in a battle between security forces and terrorists which broke out in the Kulgam area of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday morning, according to officials.

Security personnel began a cordon and search operation on Wednesday night shortly after receiving intelligence reports regarding the presence of suspected terrorists in Kadder in the district’s Behibagh neighborhood. However, after militants fired at the security officers, who replied, the situation devolved into a gunfight.

The Army’s Chinar Corps said, “On 19 December 24, based on specific intelligence input regarding the presence of terrorists, a joint operation was launched by the Indian Army & Jammu and Kashmir Police at Kader, Kulgam. Suspicious activity was observed by vigilant troops, and on being challenged, terrorists opened indiscriminate and heavy volume of fire. Our own troops effectively retaliated.”

A Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist was slain in an encounter in the Dachigram region of Jammu and Kashmir earlier this month. The targeted murders of people in Gagangir, Ganderbal, and other locations were carried out by the terrorist Junaid Ahmed Bhat.

According to sources, the Union Home Ministry ordered last month that a special task force of the National Security Guard (NSG), the nation’s counterterrorism unit, be stationed in Jammu in response to recent terrorist assaults in the area.

The Jammu area has seen a dramatic increase in terror attacks this year, affecting eight of its ten districts. 44 people have died as a result of these occurrences, including 13 militants, 14 civilians, and 18 security personnel.
