New Delhi: In a major success against organized crime in the capital, the Crime Branch (Northern Range-I) of Delhi Police apprehended two notorious gang members after a dramatic early morning encounter near Sector-34, Rohini, close to the Munak Canal.

The duo is affiliated with the infamous Kapil Sangwan alias Nandu and Vanktesh Garg gang, and one of them was wanted in connection with the sensational Bawana murder case.

The operation, conducted under the supervision of ACP Ashok Sharma and overall guidance of DCP Harsh Indora, led to the arrest of sharp shooter Sombir alias Chinu, a resident of Hisar, Haryana, and Vijay, a 31-year-old resident of Chandigarh.

Murder Case Solved

The police action comes as a significant breakthrough in FIR No. 385/25 registered at PS Bawana, relating to the recent murder of Deepak, a resident of Nangal. The incident, which occurred on June 27, 2025, also saw Deepak’s young daughter, Anchal, injured by gunfire. According to officials, Sombir alias Chinu was the primary shooter in the case and had been evading arrest.

His associate, Vijay, is a seasoned criminal with prior records and is said to have provided safe shelter and logistical support to Sombir and other members of the gang during their movements.

The Encounter

Based on credible intelligence inputs about the movement of the accused, a Crime Branch team laid a trap near the Munak Canal in the Rohini area during the early hours of July 4.

As the suspects approached, the police team moved to intercept them. Despite repeated warnings to surrender, the accused opened fire, discharging five rounds, one of which misfired.

In retaliation, the police fired four rounds, during which both suspects sustained gunshot wounds to their legs. They were subsequently overpowered and taken into custody. Both were later taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment and are now in police custody.

Weapons and Ammunition Seized

During the operation, the police recovered the following from the accused:

  • Two country-made pistols
  • Seven live cartridges
  • One misfired round
  • Four used cartridges

Officials say the seizure of these firearms is a significant indication of the accused’s involvement in the criminal underworld and the threats posed by such gangs to public safety.

Profiles of Accused

Sombir alias Chinu, son of Ram Maher, hails from Village Khedi Jalib in Hisar, Haryana. He is directly implicated in the Bawana murder case and has ties to the Kapil Sangwan and Vanktesh Garg gang, known for their violent operations and growing influence in parts of Delhi-NCR.

Vijay, son of Chander Pal, resides in Bhaskar Colony, Sector 25D, Chandigarh. A habitual offender, he has several cases against him and played a key role in facilitating the movement and concealment of his associate and other gang members.

Crackdown on Gang Violence

This encounter highlights Delhi Police’s increasing efforts to clamp down on organized crime syndicates operating in and around the capital.

The Kapil Sangwan and Vanktesh Garg gang has been on law enforcement’s radar for its involvement in multiple high-profile cases, including extortion, murder, and arms trafficking.

A senior police official stated that more arrests are likely in connection with this case as further investigations are underway. The role of additional accomplices, possible hideouts, and broader gang operations are also being probed.

The swift action by the Crime Branch team not only led to the arrest of two dangerous criminals but also prevented potential future crimes by neutralizing a key part of the gang’s network.

With this operation, the Delhi Police has sent a strong message to organized crime groups that the law will catch up with them — no matter how elusive or dangerous they may be.
