Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump made several significant announcements during his July 4 travels, highlighting international developments and domestic decisions. Most notably, he expressed optimism that a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in Gaza could be finalized by next week.
“There’s a real chance for a deal,” Trump said, referencing what he called a “positive response” from Hamas. However, he admitted he had not been briefed on the latest status of the negotiations.
While en route from the White House to New Jersey with First Lady Melania Trump, the president also addressed tensions with Russia and Iran, and touched on trade relations and tech regulations.
‘Unhappy’ Talk with Putin and Sanctions Warning
Trump disclosed that he recently spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He described the conversation as “very unhappy,” voicing frustration over Russia’s ongoing aggression in Ukraine. He warned that more U.S. sanctions are imminent. “Putin understands they are coming,” Trump said, adding that the U.S. is considering sending Patriot missile defense systems to Ukraine if the conflict escalates further.
Iran’s Nuclear Setback and Upcoming Talks with Netanyahu
Turning to the Middle East, Trump reiterated his claim that U.S. military actions had significantly disrupted Iran’s nuclear program. “They’ve been set back permanently,” he asserted, while cautioning that Tehran may resume its activities. Trump noted that Iran has not agreed to stop uranium enrichment or accept inspections from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He is scheduled to discuss the issue with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday.
Open to China Visit and TikTok Update
The president also signaled openness to meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, suggesting a mutual visit could be on the horizon. “There’s a chance I go to China,” Trump said, adding that Xi might visit the U.S. as well.
On the matter of TikTok, the president shared that a deal concerning the app’s U.S. operations is “pretty much” complete. The China-owned platform had faced a potential ban, but the administration instead gave its parent company, ByteDance, until September 17 to divest its U.S. holdings.
Tariffs Letters Ready for Dozen Countries
Trump also touched on trade policy, revealing that letters outlining new tariff levels for 10 to 12 countries have been finalized. These documents, he said, will be sent out on Monday ahead of the July 9 tariff pause deadline. “They’re signed and ready to go,” he told reporters.
As the president wrapped up his remarks, he appeared eager to project strength and readiness on a range of global issues while celebrating Independence Day.
