New Delhi: Sant Tukaram, the revered 17th-century Marathi saint and poet, becomes the focal point of a bold cinematic move by director Aditya Om, who has released Bhasha, a Hindi-language biopic, at a time when linguistic tensions are flaring across several regions of India, particularly in Maharashtra.
The film, which releases nationwide on July 18, is generating widespread attention and is being hailed as a message of unity through culture and cinema.
The film’s promotion event was recently held at Big Odeon Multiplex in New Delhi, where director Aditya Om, lead actor Subodh Bhave, actress Sheena Chauhan, and other cast members addressed the media.
Also present were noted theatre personalities, writers, senior journalists, and cultural figures including Shiva Suryavanshi, Sheesher Sharma, and Arvind Gaur.
A Dream Years in the Making
Aditya Om, a young filmmaker known for his thought-provoking projects, revealed that making a film on Sant Tukaram had been a long-standing dream. “I have been fascinated by the life and teachings of Sant Tukaram for many years,” said Om.
“After extensive research, meeting Marathi scholars, and revisiting classic cinematic portrayals of the saint, I began working on this project despite facing threats and opposition.”
Highlighting the relevance of Sant Tukaram’s universal message of love and social reform, Om emphasized that releasing the film in Hindi was a deliberate creative choice.
“In today’s environment where language is being used to divide, this film stands as a testimony that language is meant to unite. It’s a message of love, not conflict.”
Subodh Bhave as Sant Tukaram
Renowned Marathi actor Subodh Bhave essays the titular role. With over 90 Marathi films to his credit, many of them successful biopics, Bhave brings depth and gravitas to the character.
Speaking to the press, Bhave shared, “Portraying Sant Tukaram was both a challenge and an honor. I immersed myself in his writings, visited places connected to his life, and interacted with his devotees to understand his spirit.”
Bhave took a strong stand against politicizing language. “This film is a clear response to those who divide people on the basis of language. A Hindi film based on a Marathi saint shows that love and spirituality transcend linguistic boundaries.”
A New Journey for Sheena Chauhan
Sheena Chauhan, who plays the female lead, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with Bhave early in her career.
“Being part of this film has been a life-changing experience. Shooting in a Kolhapur village, learning from Subodh ji, and enjoying authentic Marathi hospitality on set made it all memorable.”
Sheena, who has acted in nine films so far, praised the collaborative spirit of the production team. She noted that the film’s emotional intensity and philosophical depth will appeal to audiences regardless of language or background.
A Familiar Face in a Divine Role
Adding to the film’s appeal is the presence of Arun Govil, best known for his portrayal of Lord Ram in the iconic Ramayana TV series.
In Bhasha, he takes on the role of Lord Vitthal, a pivotal figure in the narrative. Director Aditya Om pointed out that Arun Govil’s role serves as a significant turning point in the film’s storyline, elevating the spiritual tone of the biopic.
