New Delhi: In a major breakthrough, the Anti-Extortion & Kidnapping Cell (AEKC) of the Delhi Police Crime Branch has apprehended a key member of the notorious ‘Thak-Thak’ gang, successfully cracking a sensational robbery case linked to PS Sunlight Colony.

The accused, identified as 24-year-old Sagar, a resident of Madangir, New Delhi, was arrested following a carefully coordinated operation. With his arrest, the police have recovered a substantial portion of the stolen gold and diamond jewellery valued at several lakhs of rupees.

Robbery Incident Near I.P. Park

The case stems from a dramatic daylight robbery that occurred on June 24, 2025. The victim, Ms. Geeta Anand, was travelling with her family in a Creta car from Putkul Road to New Delhi. Around 1:00 PM, as the car approached Gate No. 4 near I.P. Park on Ring Road, a motorcycle rider knocked on the vehicle’s windscreen and pointed out a supposed issue.

The driver pulled over and stepped out of the car. In the confusion, another man swiftly snatched a handbag belonging to Ms. Anand, which contained ₹1.25 lakh in cash along with gold and diamond jewellery worth over ₹25 lakh.

The culprits fled the scene immediately after the heist. A case was subsequently registered at PS Sunlight Colony.

Crime Branch Operation

Given the serious nature of the crime, the Crime Branch launched a dedicated operation under the leadership of Inspectors Daleep Kumar and Priyanka. Two teams were constituted, including officers SI Ankur, SI Premjeet, SI Vijay Hooda, SI Ashok, SI Sanjay Sharma, HC Somesh, and HC Vinit.

The operation was carried out under the supervision of ACP Pankaj Arora and overall guidance of DCP (Crime-I) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, IPS. Investigators reviewed CCTV footage from all possible routes near the crime scene to trace the movement of the suspects.

Simultaneously, they examined criminal records of offenders previously involved in crimes with a similar modus operandi. Known offenders were questioned, and secret informers were deployed to gather intelligence on potential suspects.

Arrest and Interrogation

On July 14, 2025, acting on a tip-off, police teams laid a trap near Outer Ring Road in Kilokari Village, on the route leading to the DND Flyover.

Around 6:00 PM, a suspect was identified and apprehended with the help of a secret informer. During preliminary questioning, the individual gave evasive answers but eventually confessed under sustained interrogation. He identified himself as Sagar, and admitted his role in the robbery along with an accomplice who remains at large.

Following the confession, police recovered a significant portion of the stolen jewellery from his possession. Sagar was placed under arrest under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, and the concerned police station at Sunlight Colony was informed.

Accused Background

Sagar, 24, resides in Madangir and lives with his family. He studied up to the 8th standard and formerly worked as a mechanic. However, his desire for a flashy and luxurious lifestyle reportedly led him into a life of crime.

Police records show he has previously been involved in six similar cases, primarily thefts and robberies using distraction techniques characteristic of the Thak-Thak gang.

Recovered Items

At the time of his arrest, police recovered the following stolen items:

  • One diamond and gold necklace
  • One diamond and gold bracelet
  • A pair of diamond and gold earrings
  • Four diamond and gold rings
  • One gold watch

The investigation is ongoing, and efforts are being made to apprehend Sagar’s accomplice and recover the remaining stolen valuables.

Police have urged citizens to remain vigilant, especially when travelling with valuables, and to report any suspicious behaviour immediately.

This arrest marks a significant step in curbing the activities of the Thak-Thak gang, a group notorious for targeting unsuspecting commuters through deception and quick snatch-and-run tactics.
