New Delhi: In a proud moment for the national capital, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has been awarded the prestigious “Super Swachh League City Award” under the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25, cementing its position as the cleanest city in the category of cities with a population between 50,000 and 3 lakh.
The award was conferred during a grand ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, and was presented by President of India Droupadi Murmu and Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Shri Manohar Lal Khattar.
The accolade highlights NDMC’s relentless pursuit of excellence in urban sanitation, solid waste management, and eco-friendly initiatives.
The recognition was jointly received by Shri Ashish Sood, Minister of Urban Development, Delhi Government; Shri Keshav Chandra, Chairman, NDMC; and Shri Kuljeet Singh Chahal, Vice Chairman, NDMC. Their leadership and vision have played a crucial role in achieving this national recognition.
A Milestone in Urban Cleanliness
This honor is not just a feather in the cap for NDMC, but also a reflection of the organization’s proactive policies and sustained efforts to maintain high sanitation standards and promote environmental sustainability.
The “Super Swachh League City” title acknowledges the Council’s innovative and people-centric strategies that have resulted in significant improvements in cleanliness and civic hygiene across New Delhi.
NDMC emerged as a frontrunner by excelling in key performance indicators such as door-to-door waste collection, segregation at source, use of smart sanitation technologies, citizen feedback, and beautification of public spaces.
The award category specifically covered urban local bodies with populations ranging from 50,000 to 3 lakh, making this an even more focused and competitive distinction.
Leadership Speaks
Speaking on the occasion, NDMC Chairman Shri Keshav Chandra expressed deep appreciation for the dedicated workforce behind the achievement.
“This award is a true reflection of our continued efforts toward cleanliness and service excellence. I want to especially acknowledge our Safai Sevaks and sanitation workers, whose hard work and dedication have brought this honor to the city. We will continue to raise the bar for urban management and sustainable living.”
Vice Chairman Shri Kuljeet Singh Chahal also expressed gratitude toward residents, saying:
“This recognition belongs to every citizen of New Delhi. Their cooperation, discipline, and shared commitment towards cleanliness played a vital role. It is the spirit of collective responsibility that has made this possible.”
He also highlighted the integral role of the Council’s sanitation and horticulture teams, engineering divisions, Project Monitoring Unit (PMU) experts, and urban planners in transforming New Delhi’s urban spaces.
Community Participation & Innovation: The Core Drivers
NDMC’s approach has been multi-faceted—combining citizen engagement, digital monitoring, real-time sanitation tracking, beautification drives, and green cover enhancement.
Special campaigns for awareness on waste segregation, plastic ban enforcement, composting, and use of smart bins have contributed to higher rankings in the Swachh Survekshan assessment.
In addition, NDMC has been at the forefront of using eco-friendly technologies such as solar-powered compactors, GPS-enabled garbage trucks, sensor-based public toilets, and smart water management systems.
Regular cleanliness audits, community participation drives like “Swachhata Hi Seva”, and school-led cleanliness competitions have helped instill a culture of cleanliness and civic responsibility among residents and stakeholders.
A Model for Other Cities
The “Super Swachh League City” award not only brings national recognition but also positions NDMC as a model for other urban bodies striving for sustainable and inclusive development.
The Council’s commitment to improving green cover, managing waste scientifically, and empowering citizens has proven to be a sustainable roadmap for urban excellence.
As NDMC looks to the future, it plans to deepen its green initiatives, expand composting zones, introduce more AI-based sanitation monitoring systems, and promote climate-resilient infrastructure.
Looking Ahead
In reaffirming its pledge, NDMC reiterated its dedication to a Cleaner, Greener, and Healthier New Delhi. With a renewed focus on urban innovation, citizen engagement, and environmental stewardship, the Council aims to maintain its position as a leader in urban governance and sustainability.
The recognition at the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 is not just an award, but a responsibility—to lead by example, inspire civic pride, and continue building a future-ready capital city for India.
