Today Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, has raised her voice and showed concern in West Bengal assembly winter session over ongoing attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh. She urged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take step personally to ensure the safety of minorities in the Bangladesh and called for the deployment of a United Nations peacekeeping mission there.

She also insisted that Parliament must give an assessment on India’s position on the current state of events in Bangladesh by the Union’s external affairs minister. She made clear that her intentions are not to intrude in other country’s affairs but pointed out that when Bangladeshi fishermen had mistakenly entered Indian waters, they were treated well. The same expectation is from the Bangladeshi government.

“We have families, properties and loved ones in Bangladesh. We accept whatever stance the Government of India takes on this but we condemn atrocities on religious grounds anywhere in the world and appeal to the union government, and the Prime Minister, to intervene,” WB CM said.

The unrest started in August when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was forced to step down due to a “student-led” uprising, and an Army-led interim administration took power. Later, ISCKON Monk Chinmoy Das added to the agitation.
