The Government of Tripura asked Bangladesh to pay back the electricity dues of Rs 135 crore on an immediate basis according to the power trade agreement made through NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd. This decision of Tripura comes after ‘Anti-India activities’ has been on a rise in Bangladesh.

According to Tripura’s power minister, Ratan Lal Nath, Bangladesh has regularly made payments despite that a sum of Rs. 135 crore is pending. Further, he emphasizes that Bangladesh has been charged a decent rate of Rs. 6.65 for each unit of power which is certainly lower than any domestic connections within India.

Furthermore, this is not the first time that Tripura and Bangladesh are going through a strained relation. In May 2024, Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) had restricted power supply to Bangladesh due to untimely or failed payments.

Recent events including an attack on Agartala-Kolkata bus in Dhaka’s Brahmanbaria district on Saturday and an accident of a truck and auto- rickshaw where the bus passengers have been threatened and anti India slogans shouted are however considered to be the trigger of this incident.
