The 32nd meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) was held on December 5, 2024 in New Delhi. The Indian team was led by Shri Gourangalal Das, Joint Secretary (East Asia), while the Chinese mission was led by Mr. Hong Liang, Director General of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department.
The meeting aimed to review the situation in border areas and discuss ways to maintain peace and tranquillity along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The two parties affirmatively endorsed the fulfilment of the most recent disengagement agreement, which concluded the resolution of the problems raised in 2020. They also planned for the next Special Representatives meeting, which will take place on October 23, 2024, as agreed upon by the two presidents at their meeting in Kazan.
In order to avoid a repetition of the 2020 events, all parties evaluated the situation in border areas and considered the lessons learned. Through established systems, they emphasized the significance of frequent meetings and exchanges at the military and diplomatic levels in this framework.
In line with the bilateral agreements, protocols, and understandings achieved between the two governments, they both agreed that efficient border management and the preservation of peace and tranquillity are essential. During the visit, the Foreign Secretary was also contacted by the head of the Chinese delegation.
