Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw declared that Transportation technology in India has achieved a milestone when India’s first Hyperloop test track, an 11-kilometer facility at the IIT Madras Discovery Campus in Thaiyur, was completed. “Bharat’s first Hyperloop test track (410 meters) completed. Team Railways, IIT-Madras’ Avishkar Hyperloop team, and TuTr (an incubated startup),” the Minister said.

As for now, the inaugural test run on the track was conducted at a speed of 100 kmph, with plans to gradually increase the speed to 600 kmph during future trials. It is a joint venture between IIT Madras and steel magnate Lakshmi Niwas Mittal. Its first in Asia with 400 tonnes of steel provided by ArcelorMittal and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS). The project was supervised mainly by engineers from ArcelorMittal’s engineering division (AMDEC).

Two teams from IIT Madras—TuTr Hyperloop, a firm fostered at the institution, and Avishkar Hyperloop, a student organization—built the Hyperloop track. Another important collaborator in the project is the Ministry of Railways.
