The UN general assembly officially declared December 21 as world meditation day to promote good mental health, peace and overall well being. This day encourages people around the world to take a moment for mindfulness, fostering calm, self awareness and emotional balance.
This motion of UN general assembly was supported by core group of countries including India, Liechtenstein, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Mexico and Andorra. Indian ambassador of UN general assembly posted on social media, ”A day of comprehensive well being And inner transformation! Glad that India alongwith other nations of the core group guided the unanimous adoption of the resolution on declaration of 21st December as world meditation day UN General Assembly today. India’s leadership in overall human well-being stems from our civilization dictum of ‘Vadusdhaiva Kutumbakam” the whole world is one family.
21 December marks the winter solstice, which in Indian tradition is the beinginning of uttarayana an auspicious time of the year, especially for inner reflection.
India has taken the lead in declaration of 21st June as Summer solstice as international day of yoga by the UN in 2014. In a decade, it has become a global movement which has led to common people across the globe practising yoga and making it part of their daily lives.”
