The Supreme Court constrained all the courts across the country from admitting or passing orders on any new fresh suit or plea-seeking survey of mosques. The court also ordered not to pass any effective or final order in the ongoing pending suits.

The intervention of SC comes following the legal proceeding related to the series of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act 1991. The Act prohibits conversion of any place of worship from what was established on August 15, 1947.

The development follows numerous petitions filed across India, seeking surveys of mosques claiming that a Hindu temple once stood at the site where a mosque is now built. Some of the spectacular examples are the disputes in Gyanvapi Mosque, Mathura, and Bhojshala Sambhal.

Recently, violence broke out in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh following the local court order to survey of a mosque there. The incident has led to chaos and is believed to disturb the religious harmony in the country.
