South Korea’s parliament reports that the country’s six opposition parties have filed a fresh joint petition to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over his proclamation of martial law.

The National Assembly reported that the main opposition Democratic Party and five minor opposition parties filed the impeachment motion on Thursday afternoon. If the motion is approved, the constitutional court would debate for up to 180 days, during which Yoon’s presidential powers will be suspended.

Yoon imposed emergency martial law on the night of December 3, but it was overturned by the National Assembly some hours later. Earlier in the day, the besieged president stated that his declaration of martial law was intended to defend against the majority opposition’s “legislative dictatorship”.
