The Government of India is set to introduce the “One Nation, One Election” Bill in the Lok Sabha today. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal to present two key bills which are The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, and The Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill.

The proposed legislation aims to implement the “One Nation, One Election” initiative, which seeks to hold simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies. The bill is expected to be referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for wider consultation after its introduction.

The opposition, including the Congress party, has expressed concerns over the bill, citing potential threats to India’s federal structure and democratic principles . The government plans to roll out the initiative in two phases, with the first phase combining Lok Sabha and state Assembly elections, and the second phase aligning local body elections.
