“One Nation, One Election” Bill Referred To Joint Parliamentary Committee For Further Review

The Lok Sabha passed a resolution endorsing the two measures on holding simultaneous elections to a 39-member joint parliamentary committee of both Houses just minutes before it was adjourned sine die on Friday. Amid objections from the opposition over Home Minister Amit Shah’s comments about Ambedkar, the motion, which was proposed by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, was approved by a voice vote.

The resolution further suggested that the names of the Rajya Sabha members who would be appointed to the joint committee be communicated. Last Monday, the Cabinet approved the measure, which aims to hold simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies throughout India. The introduction of the bill was met with opposition. 196 members of the division voted against the bill’s introduction, while 269 members supported it.

The Shiv Sena (UBT), CPI (M), and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) each have one member on the government’s proposed list of Lok Sabha MPs, according to PTI. There are also two more members from the BJP and one from the Samajwadi Party.

Baijayant Panda and Sanjay Jaiswal of the BJP, Chhotelal of the Samajwadi Party, Anil Desai of the Shiv Sena (UBT), Shambhavi of the Lok Janshakti Party, and K Radhakrishnan of the CPI(M) are among the new Lok Sabha MPs suggested for the committee.The two “one nation, one election” (ONOE) measures, one of which aims to modify the Constitution, will be examined by the committee.

The Lok Sabha MPs suggested for the panel also include former Union Ministers Anurag Thakur and P P Chaudhary, Bhartruhari Mahtab of the BJP, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra of the Congress. Twelve members of the BJP are among the 17 members of the National Democratic Alliance, which is led by the BJP, that make up the Lok Sabha.

Today, Union Law Minister Arjun Meghwal introduced two significant legislation in the Lok Sabha: the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill 2024 and the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill 2024. These bills suggest holding state and Lok Sabha elections at the same time.

Prime Minister Modi recommended that the One Nation, One Election Bill be forwarded to the Joint Parliamentary Committee after it was brought before the cabinet for approval, according to Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
