The Iranian government has formally lifted the ban on WhatsApp and Google Play Store, remarking a considerable shift in the country’s internet restrictions, the islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported on Tuesday that a meeting was called with the participation of the heads of all three branches of government, ministers and members of the Supreme Council on reviewing and adjusting policies on Internet governance and regulations.
Following the evaluation of assessments from relevant authorities, the council sanctioned the changes to the existing internet limitations. Iran’s minister of Information and Communication Technology, Sattar Hashemi announced on social media platform, X that On Tuesday, Iran took the first step towards ending internet restrictions. He further paid gratitude to the Iranian President, media and activists for their efforts and cooperation.
IRNA reported that this move to lift the ban coincides with the broader approach of the Iranian government to manage the digital environment and highlighting the importance of regulated cyberspace governance and stressing the need to support local platforms.
The lifting of Internet restrictions was part of a key commitment made by President Masoud Pezeshkian in his presidential campaign.And this decision marks the fulfillment of the promise.
