Russia has stated that any peace agreement to end the conflict in Ukraine must include guarantees for its own security. This comes after a series of international efforts to end the conflict including the June 2024 Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland, which was not attended by Russia.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has expressed skepticism about a weak ceasefire in Ukraine, stating that it would be ineffective in achieving lasting peace. Instead, Moscow is pushing for a comprehensive, legally binding agreement that addresses the security concerns of both Russia and its neighbors.

Lavrov emphasized that a simple truce would not suffice, as it would likely be exploited by Western powers to rearm Ukraine. He believes that a more robust agreement is necessary, one that outlines clear conditions for ensuring regional security and prevents future violations.

The Russian government is seeking a permanent solution to the conflict, rather than a temporary fix. Lavrov stressed that Moscow wants legal documents that are drafted in a way that makes it impossible to violate the agreements. This suggests that Russia is committed to finding a durable peace that addresses the underlying security concerns driving the conflict.

However Russia’s demand for peace and security guarantee has made the peace process more complicated. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has proposed a 10-point peace plan, which includes Russia’s withdrawal from Ukranian territory and respect for Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

The situation between two countries is still complex, various countries and organisations are attempting to facilitate a resolution. India has said it can’t sign the joints statement as it wants to maintain good relations with both Ukraine and Russia.

This devlopment demonstrates the challenges in finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict, which has been going on for years now. Diplomatic efforts are expected to continue in the upcoming weeks.
