Amid the military threats by China, Taiwan conducted its first tabletop exercise in the Presidential office simulating military escalation between the two countries.
The exercise in the office was held under the supervision of Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim and National Security Council Secretary-general Joseph Wu. The exercise involved around 19 central ministries, local governments, and NGOs
Tabletop exercises are carried out to make everyone familiar with the real-time scenarios which can unfold during a real military escalation to maintain coordination among the organization in tough situations.
Taiwanese officials have stated that this is Taiwan’s preparation for China’s military drills and to ensure readiness for all possible situations.
China-Taiwan Relations
The Republic of China, also known as ‘Taiwan’ is an island separated from the People’s Republic of China also known as ‘China’. Since 1949, Taiwan has been governed independently however China views this island as a rebellious province and has vowed to unify it with the mainland.
China has also used a variety of tactics short of armed conflict aimed to bring down Taiwan and to make the people of Taiwan acknowledge and consider the option to unify with the mainland.
In the recent past Taiwan was reported to have recorded 153 Chinese military aircraft in a duration of 25 hours in October following Beijing’s military drill serving as a stern warning toTaiwanese forces.
