Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, exhibited conviction in Russia’s victory in its conflict with Ukraine, affirming that divine endorsement is on their side. On Thursday, after attending the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council (SEEC) meeting in St. Petersburg, Putin told reporters that when asked whether Russia would win the war with Ukraine by 2025, he said, “I believe in God. And God is with us.” His responses came after a report on a U.S. proposal to “freeze” the conflict along current front lines in exchange for holding off Ukraine’s NATO membership.

The Russian leader echoed that Russia’s utmost priority remains to achieve victory on the battlefield while resolving key domestic issues. “We are striving to end the conflict,” he said, adding, “We believe that we will be successful on the front line and fulfill our motive in the field of the economy, as well as address social issues, the issues of military security, and security in the broadest sense.”

On the other hand, U.S. President Donald Trump has committed to broker a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine within hours of taking office. While Trump has not highlighted the details of his proposal, American media reports suggest it could be related to freezing territorial control for both sides.

As the war continues, the difference in visions for its resolution from Putin’s battlefield to Trump’s negotiations proposal highlights the deep divides shaping the world’s response to the Ukraine crisis.
