Khan was given a five-year prison sentence after a court in May 2015 found him guilty of culpable homicide, which included driving while intoxicated. Due to insufficient evidence, the conviction was reversed on appeal later that year.

Blackbuck Poaching Case

The Bollywood press gave Khan a reputation as a “bad boy” in the 1990s and 2000s. In 2014, he got into several physical altercations with paparazzi, which made some magazines refuse to use his picture. Khan was charged in 1998 with the murders of two blackbucks (Antilope cervicapra) and an Indian gazelle (Gazella bennetti), known as chinkara in the local dialect, during the production of the film Hum Saath-Saath Hain in the state of Rajasthan. In India, both animals are protected species.

Under India’s Wildlife Protection Act and Arms Act, the incidents ultimately resulted in four separate court cases: two of which were reversed on appeal in 2016, one of which he was found not guilty of in 2017, and one of which he was given a five-year prison sentence for in 2018. Khan was released on bail after spending a few days in a Jodhpur jail while his appeals, which were still unresolved as of 2024, were being processed. Indian gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, a member of the Bishnoi community, who reveres blackbucks, publicly threatened Khan the year Khan was jailed. Since then, the actor’s security has been strengthened.
