In a shocking move, the Taliban’s supreme leader has issued a decree banning the construction of windows in residential buildings that overlook areas used by Afghan women. The order, released late Saturday, also demands that existing windows be blocked to prevent men from seeing women in their daily activities.

According to the Taliban government spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, new buildings must not have windows that allow men to see into “the courtyard, kitchen, neighbor’s well, and other places usually used by women.” The decree claims that seeing women working in kitchens, courtyards, or collecting water from wells can lead to “obscene acts.”

Municipal authorities and other relevant departments have been instructed to monitor construction sites to ensure compliance with the new rule. If existing windows are deemed to be in violation, owners will be forced to build a wall or obstruct the view to “avoid nuisances caused to neighbors.”

This latest decree is part of the Taliban’s ongoing efforts to erase women from public spaces. Since their return to power in August 2021, women have been banned from attending school beyond the sixth grade, restricted from employment, and blocked from accessing parks and other public places.

The Taliban’s ultra-strict interpretation of Islamic law has also led to a ban on women singing or reciting poetry in public. Women are encouraged to “veil” their voices and bodies outside the home, further restricting their freedom and autonomy.

The international community has condemned the Taliban’s treatment of women, with the United Nations denouncing the “gender apartheid” established by the administration. Despite these criticisms, the Taliban claims that Islamic law “guarantees” the rights of Afghan men and women.

The window ban is just the latest example of the Taliban’s attempts to control every aspect of women’s lives. As the situation in Afghanistan continues to deteriorate, the international community must remain vigilant and continue to advocate for the rights and freedoms of Afghan women.
