The Chhattisgarh Government has set up a special investigation team (SIT) to investigate the murder of journalist Mukesh Chandrakar. The 33-year-old freelance journalist went missing on January 1, and later on, his corpse was found in a septic tank on Friday.

Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma announced that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mukesh Chandrakar’s death. IPS officer Mayank Gurjar has been tasked with leading the SIT in completing the probe within a tight timeframe of 3-4 weeks, after which a chargesheet will be filed, and the government will push for an expedited trial.

The police have arrested Ritesh Chandrakar, Dinesh Chandrakar, and Mahendra Ramteke as prime suspects in Mukesh Chandrakar’s murder. However, the prime suspect, Suresh Chandrakar, a prominent Congress leader and civil contractor, remains at large. To ensure his swift capture, the police have made four special teams and have also frozen his bank accounts.

Mukesh Chandrakar’s murder became a major setback in the Bastar region’s efforts in Naxal-affected areas, where Mukesh used to report from.
