The US President-elect Donald Trump suggested employing “economic force” to pressure Canada into becoming the 51st state citing worries about US military aid and trade imbalances. He reaffirmed his intention to impose “substantial” taxes on Mexican and Canadian imports.

In response to his worries about US military aid and trade imbalances with its northern neighbor, Donald Trump went on to say that the US absorbing Canada “would really be something.”

Trump has made it clear in recent weeks that he intends to add Canada as the 51st state to the union. He has frequently made fun of Trudeau’s role as Canada’s governor. Trudeau, who resigned as the Prime Minister of Canada a day earlier, responded sharply on social media. “There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States,” he said in a post.

Donald Trump stated that he was “not going to commit to that” when asked if he could rule out a military conflict to establish US authority over Greenland or the Panama Canal.

Although Trump claimed to adore Canadians, the US is no longer able to provide financial support for Canada. Further, he added that the US had been spending hundreds of billions a year to take care of Canada and protect it.

He stated that they have lost trade deficits. Also, that they are losing massively and don’t need their cars. He asserted that Canada makes 20 per cent of their cars. Hence, the US don’t need that and rather make them in Detroit. The loss accounts to USD 200 billion a year.

“I said that’s okay to have if you’re from another state, but if you’re from another country, we don’t want to have it. We’re not going to have it with the European Union either. In The European Union, we have a trade deficit of USD 350 billion. They don’t take our cars, they don’t take our farm products, they don’t take anything. And so, we’re not going to have it with them either,” Trump said.
