A parliamentary panel will summon Meta over CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s recent comment, says BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, citing concerns of misinformation and seeking accountability from the tech giant.
This comes a day after Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw expressed disappointment over Mark Zuckerberg’s inaccurate statement regarding the Indian government losing the 2024 parliamentary elections.
“My committee will call Meta for this wrong information. Wrong information in any democratic country tarnishes the image of the country. That organization will have to apologize to the Indian Parliament and the people here for this mistake,” said Dr Nishikant Dubey, Chairman, Committee on Communications and Information Technology.
In a podcast interview, Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta Platforms, sparked a controversy when he said that the Indian government’s poor response to the COVID-19 pandemic was the reason it lost the 2024 election.
Vaishnaw chose to criticize Zuckerberg for disseminating “misinformation” on Meta’s Facebook page. “Seeing false information from Zuckerberg himself is disheartening. The Union I&B minister tagged Meta on social media sites, saying, “Let’s preserve facts and credibility.”
