The US President Donald Trump declared that he was thinking of putting 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, which may go into effect as early as February 1. Trump also promised that his new US trade policy will include punitive actions against other nations.
He signed a series of executive orders in the Oval Office and stated that they are thinking in terms of 25 percent on Mexico and Canada because they’re allowing vast numbers of people — Canada’s a very bad abuser also — vast numbers of people to come in, and fentanyl to come in.
Shortly after assuming office, Trump redoubled his tariff threats against two significant US trading partners, Canada and Mexico. He charged them with not doing enough to stop drug trafficking and illegal immigration into the United States.
Trump pledged to immediately begin the overhaul of the US trade system, to protect American workers and families. During his inauguration address, Trump declared that they will tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens, instead of taxing their citizens to enrich other countries.
During his time as president-elect, Trump repeatedly threatened to increase tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico and to raise tariffs on Chinese goods by an extra 10% if these nations did not take strong action to stop the illegal migration and fentanyl flow into the United States.
According to official trade data, the United States imports the most items from Mexico, Canada, and China.
In response to a question concerning universal tariffs, Trump stated that while he might implement them, “We’re not ready for that yet.”
