The US President Trump paused the imposed tariff of 25% on Mexico for one month as negotiations initiates between both countries.

Trump on Friday announced the first set of tariffs imposing 5 percent tariffs on Mexico and Canada, and 10 percent on China, citing a high trade deficit, use of fentanyl, and illegal immigration through these countries.

On Monday, Trump had a telephonic conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, describing it as a “friendly conversation.” During the conversation, President Sheinbaum agreed to deploy 10,000 Mexican soldiers to the border between Mexico and the United States to curb the flow of fentanyl and illegal migrants into the U.S.

Trump shared on Truth Social, “We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period”. During this pause, negotiations will be launched between the two countries, led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and senior representatives from Mexico.

Trump added, “ I look forward to participating in those negotiations, with President Sheinbaum, as we attempt to achieve a “deal” between our two Countries.”

Following the tariffs imposed by Trump, Mexico had announced its intent of retaliation through tariff and non-tariff measures in defense of its interests.
