Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Monday said Denmark was one of the US’s “best allies,” after condemnation from US Vice President JD Vance.

“We have fought along with the Americans for many decades. We are one of the United States’s most important and best allies, and that’s why I don’t want Denmark to be labelled a bad ally,” Frederiksen told the media.

US President Donald Trump has reiterated that he wants the Arctic island, which holds strategic significance and is believed to hold large untouched mineral and oil reserves, to become part of the United States.

In an interview with broadcaster Fox News, US Vice President JD Vance said that Greenland was “really important” to US “national security.”

“Frankly, Denmark, which controls Greenland, is not doing its job, and it’s not being a good ally,” Vance exclaimed.

A day after Trump assumed office as president, Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede said that Greenlanders “don’t want to be Americans.”.

Frederiksen on Monday emphasised that Denmark would continue to maintain a strong relationship with the US. “We will do what we can to influence the Americans to continue the good cooperation,” Frederiksen said.
