June 20 — Air India continues to face widespread operational disruptions as the airline cancelled at least eight more flights on Friday, affecting both domestic and international routes. The cancellations come amid heightened maintenance protocols and increased regulatory oversight following the deadly crash of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner on June 12.
The airline cited “enhanced maintenance and operational reasons” for the latest cancellations, which impacted key international routes including AI906 (Dubai–Chennai), AI308 (Delhi–Melbourne), AI309 (Melbourne–Delhi), and AI2204 (Dubai–Hyderabad). These disruptions are part of a broader crisis for the airline, which is still reeling from the tragic Ahmedabad–London Gatwick crash that claimed 271 lives — 241 passengers and crew, along with 30 individuals on the ground.
The airline has already cancelled 66 Dreamliner-operated flights since the crash. On the day of the incident alone, six Dreamliner flights were grounded. The pattern of cancellations has continued throughout the week, with Tuesday seeing at least 13 additional flights called off, including AI-159 — the rebranded version of the ill-fated AI-171 flight from Ahmedabad to London.
Passengers have been offered rebooking options and full refunds where applicable. However, many have expressed frustration over the last-minute nature of cancellations and lack of clear communication.
Air India’s leadership has reiterated its commitment to passenger safety, stating that the airline is cooperating fully with the DGCA and international aviation authorities. In a communication to stakeholders, the airline emphasized that these disruptions are part of a necessary safety protocol to ensure the long-term reliability of its fleet.
As investigations into the June 12 crash continue, Air India faces mounting pressure to restore confidence and operational stability in the weeks ahead.
