Day four of the first Test between India and England at Headingley ended with all the makings of a thrilling conclusion, as India set the hosts a steep 371-run target after an eventful second innings. Thanks to resilient centuries from KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, India posted 364 in their second innings, leaving England with a daunting chase on a pitch starting to show signs of wear.

Rahul, Pant Anchor India’s Comeback

KL Rahul played a composed and gritty innings of 137 runs, anchoring the Indian effort after an early blow when opener Shubman Gill fell cheaply. Rahul’s innings was a blend of patience and elegant strokeplay, helping India recover and build a formidable lead.

He was ably supported by wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who scored 118 runs in a counter-attacking knock. Pant became the first Indian wicketkeeper to score centuries in both innings of a Test against England—a rare and historic feat. Together, the duo stitched a vital partnership that helped India wrest control of the match.

England Strike Late to Stay in the Game

Just when India looked set to bat England out of the match, pacer Josh Tongue turned the tide late in the day. He claimed three wickets in the space of four deliveries, triggering a collapse that saw India lose their last six wickets for just 31 runs. Tongue’s late spell ensured England remained in the contest going into the final day.

At stumps, England had reached 21 without loss, with openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley safely negotiating the final overs. They now face the massive task of scoring 350 more runs on a deteriorating pitch on the fifth day.

A Blockbuster Finish on the Cards

India’s KL Rahul sounded optimistic about the final day, stating, “It’s a blockbuster finish waiting tomorrow. We hope the cracks open up and there’s rough for Jadeja.” His comments reflect the team’s hope of exploiting a worn pitch that may assist spin.

England pacer Josh Tongue, however, expressed confidence in his side’s chances. “We’re really confident. No draw has been discussed. We just go for the win,” he said.

With conditions expected to favor bowlers and both teams eyeing victory, Headingley is set for a dramatic finish.
