Former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani criticized the recent attack on Afghanistan by Pakistan. He conveyed his sympathy to the families of the martyrs and the injured. He asserted killing of innocent people to be a crime against humanity and has stressed on the need for peace and unity to end the cycle of violence.

Ghani’s words coincide with the accusations of aggression and terrorism by both Afghanistan and Pakistan against each other leading to increased hostilities between both the countries. The need for a peaceful and diplomatic solution to the prolonged dispute is the need of the time for the regions.

He emphasized Islam to be a religion of mercy and guidance and condemned Pakistan’s dual politics according to which violence in Afghanistan is considered to be ‘Shariah’ while violence against Pakistan is termed as ‘terrorism’. He stressed that history cannot be learned from memory.

He blamed the British for having drawn the Durand Line which is considered to be the bone of contention between Afghanistan and Pakistan. He believes that it was a tactic played by the British to divide people with common history, culture, and thoughts and to suppress people on both sides of the line.

Ghani appealed to the people of Pakistan and Afghanistan to take the initiative and decide their fate on their own rather than relying upon international institutions. He underscored the need for national and regional dialogue and a comprehensive participation of all groups and human power to attain peace and prosperity.
