“I did not leave the country as part of any plan, contrary to earlier reports,” Assad affirmed in a post on his Facebook page. Following the rebel overthrow of his government, he made it clear that he was evacuated by the Russians after their military installation came under attack.
“At no point during these events did I entertain the idea of stepping down or seeking refuge, nor was such a proposal ever made by anyone,” Assad asserted. “The only path forward was to resolutely continue the fight against the terrorist onslaught,” he said.
