Amid the backlash for YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia’s obscene remarks on ‘India’s Got Latent’ show, Assam Police has registered an FIR case against Youtuber Allahbadia, influencer Apoorva Makhija aka the Rebel Kid, comedian and host Samay Raina and other for promoting obscenity and engaging in sexually explicit and vulgar discussion.

Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the information through a post on X and stated, “Today @GuwahatiPol has registered an FIR against against certain Youtubers and social Influencers, namely 1. Shri Ashish Chanchlani 2. Shri Jaspreet Singh 3. Shri Apoorva Makhija 4. Shri Ranveer Allahbadia 5. Shri Samay Raina and others for promoting obscenity and engaging in sexually explicit and vulgar discussion in a show titled ‘ India’s Got Latent’”

The case has been filed by the Guwahati Crime Branch under sections – 79/95/294/296 of BNS 2023 read with Sec 67 of IT Act, 2000, read with Section 4/7 of Cinematograph Act 1952 read with Section 4/6 of Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.

During the show, Ranvir Allahbadia questioned a contestant, “Would you rather watch your parents have sex for the rest of your life — or would you join in once and stop it forever?” The remarks were encouraged by the panel including Apoorva Makhija and Samay Raina and caused an uproar of laughter among the audience.

Earlier, the National Human Rights Commission wrote a letter to Mira Chatt, Head Public Policy at YouTube, urging the removal of Allahabadiya’s clip from the platform, citing it to be “highly objectionable, inappropriate, and obscene remarks about Indian society.”

“The commission has come across certain links indicating that a certain episode of the aforementioned show features YouTubers making vulgar and explicit statements concerning women and children. The availability of such content on widely accessible platforms, including YouTube, Instagram and Facebook, poses a grave threat to the safety, dignity and the mental well-being of children, including women,” the letter read.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also called on the Centre to implement stringent measures to control the increasing prevalence of explicit content on Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms and social media streaming sites.

Addressing the issue Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “I have received information on this, but did not watch it personally. Things have been said and presented in a wrong way. Everyone has freedom of speech, but our freedom ends when we encroach upon the freedom of others. This encroachment, in my opinion, is wrong.”

“There should be a dignified way of expressing ourselves. In our society, there are rules against obscenity. It is very wrong for someone to violate those rules, and action should be taken against the violators,” he added.
