In January, the Assam Rifles made significant strides in combating smuggling activities in Mizoram, a state that shares its borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh. Throughout the month, the Assam Rifles conducted a series of operations aimed at curbing these illicit activities. Their efforts proved fruitful, as they successfully intercepted and confiscated a wide range of smuggled goods valued at over Rs 79.43 Crores. This substantial haul underscores the unit’s commitment to safeguarding the region and protecting the interests of local residents.
Assam Rifles, the paramilitary force responsible for border security, counter insurgency and maintaining law and order seized 5.58 kg of Heroin worth Rs 42.09 Crores, Tablets worth Rs 18.90 crores, 776 gms of brown sugar worth Rs 6.99 crores among various others contraband items including illegal areca nuts, foreign origin cigarettes, scales of Indian Pangolin among various others. Furthermore, it seized foreign currency worth Rs 1.48 crores.
In its drive to eliminate any form of narcotics being trafficked into India or illegally cultivated, the Assam Rifles eradicated 90,000 cannabis plants worth Rs 3.5 crores across an area of 110 acres.
The tablets seized included Yaba tablets and Methamphetamine Tablets. Among these Yaba tablets are illegal in India as it contains methamphetamine and caffeine, usually sold in the form of cheap red or pink pills. These pills considered a menace in Bangladesh, are reportedly trafficked into India through the Indo-Bangladesh border.
In its efforts to eliminate illegal activities in the country, the Assam Rifles demonstrated its capability by apprehending 26 smugglers. Along with showing its valor along the border, the paramilitary force also empowers the youth of the country by providing them with self-defense training and organizing events.
Furthermore, Assam Rifles actively participates in raising awareness among the youth by conducting lectures on topics such as hygiene and sanitation, the ill effects of tobacco, and organizing tree plantation drives, along with supporting various other cultural programs.
