In a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi accused the BJP-led central government that “a large number of illegal Rohingyas” is settled in various locations around the city because of the centre.
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri accused the AAP of engaging in “politics of diversion, false narratives, and half-truths” after the party attacked him on Twitter for saying that the BJP-led NDA government had made the “conscious decision” to settle these migrants

The issue of illegal Rohingya and Bangladeshi residents remaining in the city has been a point of contention between the ruling AAP and BJP in the lead-up to the Delhi Assembly elections in February 2025.
The BJP has already complained to the Election Commission about illegal Rohingyas and Bangladeshis registered as voters in Delhi “at the behest of AAP”.
Citing two tweets by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri in 2022, Atishi alleged the central government has settled a large number of illegal Rohingya refugees in different parts of the national capital by keeping the people and the government of Delhi in the dark.
“This seems to be going on for the past several years. On August 17, 2022, Union Urban Development Minister Hardeep Puri published two tweets that clearly show that it is a ‘conscious decision and policy’ of the BJP government to settle these refugees in Delhi,” she alleged in the letter to Shah.
According to Puri’s article, they appear to have moved into Bakkarwala’s EWS (Economically Backward Class) apartments. These apartments were intended for Delhi’s impoverished residents. “It seems that migrants are receiving the rights and amenities intended for Delhi residents,” Atishi said.
