On Thursday, 12 December 2024, The Opposition slammed the Assam cabinet’s decision to make the National Register of Citizens (NRC) application a pre-condition for obtaining an Aadhaar card, stating the state has turned into a “banana republic” under CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.
In an effort to link the Aadhaar card with the National Register of Citizens (NRC), the Assam government on Wednesday decided that all applications for the unique identity card will be rejected if the applicant or their family had not applied for the NRC. The decision was taken in view of infiltration attempts by citizens of trouble-hit Bangladesh.
Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Assam government would begin verification of applicants for Aadhaar cards and reject applicants who have not applied for NRC. After the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, he said that the General Administration Department of the Assam government would be the nodal agency for implementing the decision to link Aadhaar cards with NRC applications in the state.
The new rule, now approved, makes it mandatory for applicants to furnish their NRC application number, which was of the new rule. Meanwhile he added that this new directive would not be applicable to the central government employees, who were working in other states and did not apply for the NRC.
“In this way, we will enforce a strict mechanism to strengthen our Aadhaar issuance system so that no doubtful people can get this identity card,” he said.
