Muhammad Yunus’ interim government in Bangladesh canceled the accreditation cards of journalists on Friday revoking their access to the Secretariat citing safety and security reasons.

The Secretariat is the administrative headquarters of the government of Bangladesh located in Segunbagicha in Dhaka serving as the base for most of the ministries and government agencies and bodies.

The home ministry through a press release announced the cancellation of the accreditation cards which gave access to journalists to the Secretariat until further orders. The accreditation cards to journalists were earlier provided by the Press Information Department(PID) enabling them to gather news from the Secretariat.

The Chief Advisor’s office claimed the fire that broke at Key Point Installation(KPI) earlier this week to be the cause of this order. It mentioned that the existing accreditation card will be reviewed and the government will soon invite fresh applications from all local and international news agencies for fresh accreditation cards.

The Advisor’s office stated that a temporary daily access card will be issued by the respective ministries for their press events.
