A contention flared up at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) followed by a notice communicating that chicken biryani would be alternated with beef biryani for Sunday lunch.

The notice, discovered by students at Sir Shah Sulaiman Hall, was posted on social media and swiftly sparked a lot of reactions. Published by two “authorised” people, the notice said, “Sunday’s lunch menu has been changed, and beef biryani will be served instead of chicken biryani as per demand.”

In response to the controversy, the AMU administration explained that the notice contains a “typing error” and affirmed that those responsible for releasing this notice had been issued a show-cause notice.

“The matter was brought to our attention. We found that the notice was regarding the food menu. However, it contained a clear typing error. The notice was immediately withdrawn as it had no official signatures, raising doubts about its authenticity,”the statement by AMU administration stated.

The statement further said,“Our provost has issued a show-cause notice to the two senior students responsible for issuing the notice. We are taking this issue seriously to ensure strict adherence to university regulations.”

Responding to this incident, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nishit Sharma, who is an AMU alumnus himself condemned the university’s tackling of the issue and asserted that the university was promoting radical elements.

Sharma said, “The administration’s role in this is shameful. A notice was shared at the Sir Shah Sulaiman Hall stating that chicken biryani would be replaced by beef biryani. The notice was showcased publicly, and it was the responsibility of the senior food committee members. Such actions hints that the administration is promoting radical elements and covering up student misconduct.”
