A Bering plane carrying 10 people, including 9 passengers and 1 pilot has been reported missing near the state of Alaska on Friday.
The commercial aircraft, Cessna 208B Grand Caravan operated by Bering, took off from Unalakleet at 2:37 pm for Nome, Alaska but went missing at 4 pm local time. The aircraft was carrying 10 people including 9 passengers and 1 pilot.
The statement regarding the missing flight read, “On February 6, 2025, at 4.00 pm, AST was contacted by AKRCC in reference to an overdue aircraft. It was reported that a Bering Air Caravan had gone missing while en route from Unalakteet to Nome, with 9 passengers and 1 pilot on board. SAR crews are working to get to the last known coordinates. Updates to follow.”
According to the Nome Volunteer Fire Department, before the plane disappeared, the pilot told Anchorage Air Traffic Control that “he intended to enter a holding pattern while waiting for the runway to be cleared.”
Ground search has begun in the region for the flight however due to the unfavourable weather conditions air support is not available at the moment.
The National Guard and Coast Guard are also active in the search. The US Coast Guard is preparing to deploy a C-130 aircraft for area surveillance, while the US Air Force is providing air support from Elmendorf Air Force Base, the fire department confirmed.
A tribally owned and operated nonprofit healthcare organization, Norton Sound Health Corporation, is on stand-by “to respond to a community medical emergency.”
