The US President emphasized the need to "unify the party" as he withdrew from the campaign, despite believing he could win again, even as some Democrats questioned his ability to serve due to age and health concerns.

Outgoing US President Joe Biden claimed that if Republican Donald Trump hadn’t chosen to drop out of the race in the middle for the sake of the Democratic Party’s unity, he would have won the Presidency.

Five days before President-elect Donald Trump is sworn in, on Wednesday, January 15, President Joe Biden will give a farewell speech to the country from the White House Oval Office.

The departing president stated at the White House that he felt it was critical to “unify the party,” adding that he chose to withdraw from the campaign even though he thought he could win again, even if the party questioned whether he could even move.

“I think I would have beaten Trump, and I think that Kamala could have — would have beaten Trump,” he said. “I thought it was important to unify the party. Even though I thought I could win again, I thought it was better to unify the party.”

After a disastrous debate performance, Biden resigned under intense pressure from Democrats, and Kamala Harris took his place with only a few months to launch a campaign that typically takes years to prepare.

“That’s why I stepped aside,” Biden said, adding that he didn’t want to lead a divided party to lose an election. However, I was sure she could prevail.

After leaving office, US presidents typically avoid the spotlight. Biden has no intention of doing so. But after January 20th, he kept his plans a secret.

Trump, his predecessor, made the decision to enter politics. Barack Obama, Biden’s former boss and the 45th President of the United States, has avoided public life since he left office on January 20, 2016, with the exception of a few appearances.

Following his dismal performance at the June presidential debate in Atlanta, Biden, 82, made the decision to leave the US presidential race against Trump.

After receiving harsh criticism from his own party leaders, Biden chose to drop out of the campaign in the middle of the contest and support Vice President Kamala Harris, his running mate, as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate.

Trump defeated Harris in the election. The Republican Party won a landslide victory in the general elections, regaining the White House, retaining its majority in the House of Representatives, and gaining a majority in the Senate.
