In a poignant tribute to the valor of Indian soldiers who fought in the World Wars, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Mazargues War Cemetery near Marseille, France.
Accompanied by French President Emmanuel Macron, Modi laid a wreath adorned with the tricolor of the Indian flag during a solemn ceremony, paying homage to the sacrifices made by these brave men.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media platform X, PM Modi expressed his deep respect for the soldiers, stating, “Their bravery will never be forgotten! At Mazargues War Cemetery, President Emmanuel Macron and I paid homage to the soldiers who fought in the World Wars. This includes several Indian soldiers who valiantly fought and displayed utmost grit.”
PM further said, “All the brave soldiers answered the call of duty and fought with unwavering courage. They shed their blood in the hope of a better and more peaceful world. Many of them never returned, but their heroism will continue to be remembered for the times to come.”
The Mazargues War Cemetery, managed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), serves as a final resting place for numerous Indian soldiers who displayed extraordinary courage during the First and Second World Wars.
The cemetery is a testament to the sacrifices made by soldiers from various nations, and it holds a special significance for India, given the substantial contribution of Indian troops in both global conflicts.
The First World War, often referred to as the Great War, spanned from 1914 to 1918, while the Second World War took place from 1939 to 1945.

Additionally, a plaque at the back of the cemetery pays tribute to 205 Indian casualties who were cremated.
