Indonesia’s membership was approved by BRICS leaders in August 2023, but the country made its final decision to join after forming its newly elected government last year. As the world’s fourth-most populous nation, Indonesia brings significant economic and demographic weight to the table.
Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted Indonesia’s commitment to reforming global governance institutions and its potential to foster South cooperation, promoting mutual growth among developing nations. Indonesia’s largest economy and population in Southeast Asia are expected to strengthen BRICS’ global standing.
About BRICS:
BRICS, founded in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, has expanded significantly over the past year. New members include Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates, with Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Malaysia having formally applied to join. Saudi Arabia has yet to join despite an invitation.
Indonesia’s induction marks a significant expansion of BRICS’ reach and appeal. As a full member, Indonesia will contribute to the group’s efforts to promote economic cooperation and development among emerging economies.
