On the eve of Republic Day, the Border Security Force (BSF) made a significant discovery at the India-Bangladesh border in Majhdia, Krishnaganj, Nadia, unearthing three underground iron bunkers containing a staggering 62,200 bottles of the banned cough syrup, Phensedyl. The estimated value of the seized syrup is approximately Rs 1.41 crore. Despite the scale of the operation, no arrests were made during the raid.

According to BSF officials, the operation was initiated following a tip-off regarding the presence of underground bunkers in a garden area. The 32 Battalion of BSF South Bengal conducted the raid near Sudhirranjan Mahavidyalaya, leading to the discovery of the bunkers. The sheer volume of the seized cough syrup has raised concerns among the BSF personnel, who expressed astonishment at the extent of the smuggling network operating in the region.

The cough syrup is believed to have been stockpiled for smuggling into Bangladesh. However, heightened security measures in light of the upcoming Republic Day celebrations have forced smugglers to resort to hiding their contraband underground. Following the discovery, the bottles have been sent to the relevant authorities for further legal action.

In response to the find, the Krishnaganj Police accompanied the BSF to the site but refrained from making any public statements regarding the incident. The BSF has since launched additional search operations to locate more underground bunkers and tunnels that may be used for smuggling activities across the border.

NK Pandey, spokesperson for BSF South Bengal, emphasized the importance of the operation, stating, “This success attests to the border guards’ alertness, courage, and commitment. We are currently gathering more information about the smuggling network to uncover the broader implications of this illegal activity.”

The discovery of the bunkers has caused alarm among local residents, who are now concerned about the implications of such smuggling operations in their vicinity. The BSF’s ongoing efforts to combat smuggling and enhance border security are crucial in maintaining law and order in the region, especially during significant national events like Republic Day.

As investigations continue, the BSF remains vigilant in its mission to thwart illegal activities along the border, ensuring that such incidents do not compromise the safety and security of the nation.
