California: Rain Brings New Threats Of Mudslides, Toxic Ash To Wildfire Zones

The falling rain's intensity and pattern will crucially determine the likelihood of another calamity. Officials warn of potential "toxic ash" flows and mudslides due to the rain.

Residents in Southern California now face additional dangers as rain fell on areas most affected by recent wildfires. Expected rainfall this weekend would seem like a welcome relief, as fresh fires sprang up earlier this week and sections of Los Angeles County are still smoldering from wildfires.

However, the way the rain falls could determine whether a calamity occurs again or not. Officials are now warning that the rain might cause “toxic ash” flow and mudslides. According to the Associated Press, toxic ash is made up of all the things that have been burned in fires and may include lead, plastics, asbestos, and pesticides. According to officials, additional evacuations might be required to address the emerging dangers.

The Los Angeles region received much-needed rain on Saturday, and AccuWeather predicts more showers on Sunday. Firefighters use the moisture to help suppress the wildfires that began on January 7.

The fires have claimed the lives of over 28 people. At least 80% of the biggest flames in Los Angeles have been suppressed.

Weather service meteorologist Carol Smith informed that the issue would be if one of those showers happened to park itself over a burn area. That might be sufficient to produce debris flows.

Governor Gavin Newsom and President Donald Trump met in Los Angeles a few days ago to see the damage. Although he floated criteria for getting disaster relief, Trump stated that he would support the state.

“So the problem would be if one of those showers happens to park itself over a burn area,” weather service meteorologist Carol Smith told the AP. “That could be enough to create debris flows.”
