Lawyer Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, the spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatani Jagran Jote, has requested bail in the high court in the sedition case on the accusation of defaming the country’s flag today.
According to his lawyer, on January 2, a lower court in Bangladesh’s port city of Chittagong issued an order dismissing Chinmoy’s bail request. They requested Chinmoy’s bail from the High Court on January 12,” Chinmoy’s attorney, Apurba Kumar Bhattachariya, told ANI on the phone. He continued that they will bring this up in court for a hearing on Monday today.
On November 25 of last year, Chinmoy Krishna Das was taken into custody at the Dhaka airport. During the hearing on his bail request on January 2, a lawyer for Hindu priest Chinmoy Krishna Das informed the Chittagong court that the priest is not a traitor and has treated the motherland with the same regard as his mother.
Advocate Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee said that Bangladesh’s flag was not the one that was allegedly desecrated. A charge of sedition cannot be brought without the court’s approval. In this instance, state authorization was not requested.
In November, the Ministry of External Affairs expressed grave concern over Chinmoy Krishna Das’s detention and refusal of release.
This event comes after extremist militants in Bangladesh attacked Hindus and other minorities on several occasions. In its statement, MEA noted that there are several documented instances of theft, vandalism, and destruction of temples and deities, as well as arson and looting of minority houses and businesses.
