The Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday talked to US President Donald Trump over the phone, which was also noted as the first exchange between both leaders since Trump assumed office in the White House.

PM Modi, through his post on X, informed about his dialogue with US President Trump, where he mentioned that he congratulated him on his victory in the recent elections and both leaders discussed bilateral relations during their telephonic communication.

PM Modi wrote in a post on X, “Delighted to speak with my dear friend President Donald Trump. Congratulated him on his historic second term. We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. He further added, “We will work together for the welfare of our people and towards global peace, prosperity, and security.”

The Prime Minister had earlier talked to Trump just after he won the presidential elections on November 7. During the conversation, Trump admired PM Modi, illustrating him as a magnificent man and that the whole world loved him.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar represented India at Trump’s swearing-in ceremony on January 20 at the invitation of the US government and conveyed a letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to President Trump.

Modi and Trump are probably to meet in mid-February if Trump visits Paris for the Artificial Intelligence (AI) summit hosted by the French President.

There are also assumptions that if Trump does not attend the AI summit, PM Modi may travel to the US in February for the first meeting between the two leaders.

As per the sources, no dates have been fixed, and all options are being considered in the background of possible tensions over undocumented migrants and tariffs.

A final decision will be arrived at after a few meetings with the Trump administration. President Trump last met PM Modi in February 2020 in India. The US President will visit India later in the year when India hosts the Quad summit.
