The Congress has slammed the Centre and Uttar Pradesh government over the stampede at Sangam, calling for Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to be replaced as Maha Kumbh manager. They also demanded a halt on VVIP mobility to prevent further disruptions.
“Half-baked arrangements, VIP movement, paying more attention to self-promotion and mismanagement are responsible for this. Such arrangements despite spending thousands of crores of rupees are condemnable,” the Congress chief said in a post in Hindi on social media.
On the auspicious day of Mauni Amavasya, thousands of devotees rushed to take a holy bath at Sangam, causing a stampede-like situation. Many of the injured were transferred to the hospital in Maha Kumbh Sector 2 as medical personnel and volunteers raced to administer first assistance.
Despite the fact that many devotees were still swimming at Sangam and other ghats in the Mela region, the akharas canceled their customary “Amrit Snan” for Mauni Amavasya in light of the occurrence.
According to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, it is deeply tragic to learn that “many people lost their lives” and several more were hurt in the rush on the banks of the Tirthraj Sangam during the Maha Kumbh.
“Our deepest condolences to the families of the devotees and we wish for the speedy recovery of the injured,” he said.
Kharge said, adding that there are still many significant “shahi snans” left. The central and state governments should wake up now and improve the system so that such unpleasant incidents do not happen in the future.
“The VIP movement should be controlled and the arrangements for lodging, food, first aid, and devotee movement, among other things, should be expanded.” Our sages and saints also desire this,” he remarked.
Congress employees were urged by Kharge to assist the victims in whatever way they could.
The most important Maha Kumbh rite, the Amrit Snan on Mauni Amavasya, is anticipated to attract almost 10 crore pilgrims.
The day’s spiritual significance is increased this year because, after 144 years, a rare celestial alignment known as the “Triveni Yog” is taking place.
