On the occasion of the 76th Republic Day, Mallikarjun Kharge, President of the Indian National Congress, shared a heartfelt letter on social media, extending his warm wishes to the citizens of India.
In his message, Kharge paid homage to the leaders who played pivotal roles in India’s freedom struggle and the formation of the Constitution, emphasizing the importance of these historical figures in shaping the nation.
In a critical tone, Kharge condemned the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for what he described as ongoing attacks on the Constitution and the erosion of esteemed government institutions.
He accused the ruling party of undermining India’s federal structure and fostering communal discord through divisive politics. “Every sacred tenet of the Constitution is being shredded into pieces by an authoritarian regime,” he said.
The Congress leader highlighted the deteriorating economic conditions in the country, pointing out the continuous rise in taxes and the struggles faced by the common people.
He lamented that the Constitution is being dismantled by an authoritarian regime, urging citizens to uphold the values enshrined in the preamble as a tribute to the ancestors who fought for India’s independence.
In his letter, Kharge stated, “On behalf of the Indian National Congress, I extend my warm Republic Day wishes to each one of you.” He reflected on the significance of the Constitution, noting that this year marks 75 years since its adoption, which he described as the “conscience keeper and soul of the Indian Republic.”
He paid tribute to iconic leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, and others who contributed tirelessly to the establishment of the republic.
Kharge expressed reverence for the members of the Constituent Assembly, whose collective wisdom crafted a document that embodies the aspirations of India’s diverse populace.
Kharge expressed gratitude towards various segments of society, including the armed forces, farmers, scientists, educators, and athletes, acknowledging their contributions as foundational pillars in the nation-building process and their role in promoting India’s cultural heritage on a global scale.
The Congress President also recognized the sacrifices made by soldiers in the armed forces and paramilitary units, thanking them for their commitment to the nation’s integrity and sovereignty.
He acknowledged the invaluable contributions of scientists and educators in transforming India into a knowledge-driven society, as well as the hard work of farmers who ensure food security for the nation.
As he celebrated the Republic Day, Kharge urged reflection on the current state of the country, which he claimed is witnessing relentless assaults on constitutional values.
He criticized the ruling party for degrading institutions that have been built over decades, asserting that political interference in autonomous bodies has become commonplace.
He expressed concern over the erosion of federalism and the rights of states governed by opposition parties, citing a decline in parliamentary functioning due to the ruling government’s authoritarian tendencies.
Kharge pointed out that universities and self-governing institutions are facing increasing intrusion, while a significant portion of the media has been transformed into a propaganda tool for the ruling party. He accused the government of stifling dissent and targeting opposition leaders, creating an environment of fear and repression.
He further condemned the rise of a divisive agenda rooted in religious fundamentalism, which he claimed has led to the marginalization of minorities and the targeting of secular individuals.
Kharge highlighted the plight of marginalized communities, including Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes, who he said are being treated as second-class citizens.
He noted the ongoing violence and atrocities against these groups, citing the unrest in Manipur as an example of the government’s failure to ensure accountability.
The Congress leader also addressed the widening economic inequality in the country, alleging that the ruling party is favoring a select group of wealthy individuals while neglecting the needs of the poor and middle classes.
He criticized the government’s economic policies, which he claimed have drained the savings of ordinary citizens and led to a decline in living standards. Kharge expressed concern over the exodus of elites seeking better opportunities abroad, attributing this to the government’s failures.
In his closing remarks, Kharge emphasized the need to preserve and protect the core values of the Constitution—justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. He called on citizens to uphold the ideals espoused by the nation’s founders and to be prepared to make sacrifices to safeguard the Constitution, framing this as a true tribute to their ancestors.
The letter concluded with a reiteration of his Republic Day wishes: “Once again, I wish you a very Happy Republic Day. Jai Bapu, Jai Bheem, Jai Samvidhaan.”
