A 48-year-old Rajasthan police constable was taken into custody on Sunday for the offence of sexually assaulting a pregnant woman in a Jaipur city hotel while her three-year-old son was present in the room, police said.

Constable Bhagaram reportedly lured the 27-year-old woman under the excuse of registering her statement about her husband’s fight with a neighbour. Police said that he threatened to put her husband in jail if she rebelled. ACP Vinod Kumar Sharma said a forensic team investigated the crime scene, and the constable has been suspended.

“A medical examination of the survivor was conducted, and an investigation is ongoing,” he said. The woman, who was three months pregnant, was alone at her home with her son on Saturday when the constable arrived and asked for her statement. He asked her to follow him to the police station but instead took her to a hotel on Shyopur Road in the Sanganer area, police said.

At the reception, he reportedly introduced himself as a police officer and asked for a room, justifying to the staff that the woman was sick and needed to change clothes. Once inside, he allegedly slapped her, gagged her with a towel, and raped her.

Initially terrified to file the case, the woman later reached police in the evening with the help of local representatives. The woman’s husband said the attack seems to be planned. “On Friday, my neighbour beat me with an iron rod, and we both logged complaints with police. Three cops, including Bhagaram, came to investigate,” he said.

He said the constable called him the next morning and advised him to go to work. “He told me police would be arresting my neighbour that day, and if I was around, I might be taken into custody too. So, I left,” he said. After this, Bhagaram allegedly came to their home in civilian clothing to check that the woman was alone. He stayed for a short time before leaving to call her later and directed her to accompany him.

She grew suspicious when the constable took a different path but followed after he reassured her. After that, he called her again, afraid that she might report the crime, the husband said. The couple feared revenge and avoided Sanganer police station, where Bhagaram was posted. “He told my wife that if she went near the station, he would ensure I was locked up and never got released,” the husband said.

Instead, they reached Malviya Nagar police station, where senior officers intervened, and an FIR was logged against the constable. Bhagaram had been posted in Jaipur for nearly two decades, serving at several stations before being shifted to Sanganer in February. Police said further legal action against him was in process.
